APHIS is responsible for safeguarding U.S. plant and animal resources against introduction of foreign pests and diseases in a manner consistent with international trade obligations, and to provide technical expertise in ensuring that other countries' plant and animal health import requirements also conform to science-based standards that do not unfairly limit market access for U.S. agricultural products.

APHIS has an office in Lima located in the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru. APHIS/Lima provides technical support to Peruvian government agencies and agricultural producers concerning U.S. sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) import requirements and regulations and also help U.S. exporters with questions regarding Peru's SPS policies, regulations and institutions.
